I consider at first to make a 4pt with four and 12/9 with three but we can't retain those checker on 12 point next roll. White's board will improve and we have to play with something, so those alone checker after 12/9 will have to go in any case. So I think your plan with moving 12 pt with 12/9 12/8 is the best move here.
