Yeah, men's Olympic soccer is just not that big of a deal. As a soccer fan you have a lot to get excited about with league championships, the Champion's League, World Cup, and the Euro's (and other continental championships) but the Olympics are just a kind of after-thought. I think there might even be some odd age requirements keeping some of the better players away from the Olympics further reducing it in importance.

There's also always a constant struggle between club teams and national teams. The national teams always want to be able to pull their best players from club play to use in matches but obviously the clubs hate that (not just because it might interfere with their matches but also because of the chance of injury). With the WC it's going to happen and the scheduling usually accommodates this but not so with the Olympics. The English Premier League just started up their new season so obviously players had to make choices between their club teams and their national teams.
