I believe every other sport would handle a tie correctly; only gymnastics has this goofiness. Of course, if you have two tied for first you still give out only three medals, two gold and and bronze. (Tie for 2nd: 1 gold, two silver). Only when there is a tie for 3rd do you award 4 medals.

It is curious in boxing that they always award two bronzes. Seems odd; I'd have them fight one more time to get a true third place.
