roll out setting

I've been wondering about this myself lately. E.g., we pretend that the results of rollouts are gospel when we agree with them, and when we disagree we say we don't trust the rollouts and go with our intuition. Then we're told that gnubg is better at some positions and Snowie at others, etc., etc. (I'll tell you what- for what I paid for Snowie vs. what I paid for gnubg I want Snowie to be better at all positions!!)
But the question then remains, which positions is one good at versus the other and is this documented anywhere or just part of the esoteric art of backgammon?
And are there any circumstances where a 2-ply evaluation is better than a 3-ply evaluation? If so, why?
And why is gnu 1-ply the same as Snowie 2-ply? Or is it the other way around?
And I'll tell you what. Some people have proposed variations to reduce luck and increase skill in backgammon. Here's my idea- throw out the game altogether, and just give the honors to those who can explain, to a layman, what all the various rollout settings and results really mean. Attach electrodes to the brains of us mere mortals and measure our synaptic responses to a lecture on the settings for anyone brave enough to try to explain it! This could be a tough one- you'd have to be smart enough to understand it and lucid enough to explain it.
Thanks for letting me vent! I feel better now. :-)
