For me, as somebody who was there when this was played and therefore was caught up in the emotion of the match rather than later looking at this position from my desk, it was the best play I saw Bob make. Why? Because it put huge pressure upon his highly thought of (Yamin Yamin Giant No 1 2008) opponent – Falafel in front of an audience of his peers. How do you play a match when you’re playing a much better fancied player than yourself? Submit to his/her reputation or take the bull by the horns and throw the load on him/her should the opportunity arise to do so? Bob recognised the position at that score as a re-double, checked himself, saw it as a possible take, thought about it some more, confirmed it all in his head, shipped the cube back and let the weight of the considerable prize fund and reputation fall at Falafel’s feet.
