Italics you need two html tags, the opening tag or < i > (without spaces), then the text you want italicized, then the closing tag or < /i >.

Example:

< i >It is normal for me to be up at 5 am, and functional < /i >

Take out the spaces and you'll get:

It is normal for me to be up at 5 am, and functional
