In my kids' high school, which is supposedly one of the two or three best public high schools in New Hampshire, kids are tracked. Those not in the top track seem to get shortchanged, as it were. Somehow, my son was put into middle-track Social Studies in ninth grade, got straight A-pluses with little effort and without being pushed to do more. He said the level of material taught was pretty rudimentary, with many in the class being allowed to slack off. I've heard similar stories from my kids and their friends. If that's average even in a "good" public school, parents ought to be up in arms.
