I started life by making plays like 6/5 6/4 1/off, or 6/3 1/off in such positions. I forget whether I was following Robertie (blue) or some old Magriel column.

Then I switched to making plays like 3/off 1/off, which compromises between playing to maintain a board, and taking off extra checkers. Since then I've noticed that bots have more of a bias towards ripping checkers.

I don't have any general rules beyond "It's better than I initially think to take off extra checkers." That's what guided me here. After taking two off the 2 point, hitting and praying has to be done if possible, but it's hard with any 6 or 5, so it looks like a chancy variation to count on.
