There are certain things you can accomplish in the Olympics when you have a nation of 1.3 billion people and an authoritarian government. If one looks back a couple decades one can find that East Germany, with a population just a fraction of the United States', completed very closely in the medal count with the United States.

For an interesting contrast of cultural attitudes, compare China's medal count to India's medal count, whose population is not far behind China's.

For a mix of the Olympics from a mixture of sports and political viewpoints I'd recommend checking out Washington Post sportswriter Tom Boswell's many columns that he wrote from Beijing. This will get you started: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/linkset/2005/03/24/LI2005032402520.html
