Unfortunately all of these females looked better when they were competing. But such is life. I know we males go downhill, too, but I don't watch that as closely.
There is a double standard when it comes to looks and aging, and I don't think it is anywhere near all explained by historical social norms. I think natural selection is also likely an issue. Here's what I'm thinking might be the reason:
Men can mate with desireable (in the eye of the beholder) women if they are old, fat, and ugly, if they are rich and/or powerful.
Women who are old, fat, and ugly, and who are rich and or powerful have an inordinately (at least compared to their male counterparts) difficult time mating with attractive men.
As I mentioned above, I think natural selection is the major issue here. Historically, women who were attracted to men who were rich and/or powerful tended to not only survive when times got tough, but more importantly (from a natural selection POV) so did their offspring. Women who didn't have that urge tended to have their genes removed from the gene pool.
Along those lines, wealth and power tended to be aquired or earned by men with genes which were superior from a group survival point of view, although some underhanded scum were also rich or powerful even though they undermined the group.
Men who were humorous or musically talented or otherwise artistically talented probably had a superior ability to survie in hunting groups relative to their physical strength and prowess which may or may not be lacking. The reasoning here is that the other men in their hunting and/or combat missions whould appreciate their unique skills, and thus on discouraging hunts, or in combat with other groups, the other men in the group might help them survive when they might otherwise not have bothered helping them out.
Similarly, men who were attracted to women whose "use by date" has expired (i.e. who are old enough to now be barren) tended to have their genes removed from the gene pool.
Along those lines, men who were attracted to what most modern men might consider "ugly" were likely to disproportionately be mating with women who were mentally retarded, or physically deformed. As such, their offspring had a lesser chance of surviving and were bad for the groups survival.
There are more interactions going on with wealth/power for men and attractiveness for women than I am mentioning, but hopefully my main points are getting across, namely that men who are rich, or powerful, or have a great sense of humor, or are musical or otherwise artistic, are much more likely for natural selection reasons to mate much more easily than other men, despite looks that are less than handsome. Also that women who are of childbearing age and who have no obvious physical defects, are for natural selection reasons more likely to be considered attractive by men than women who are over 40 or who look at first blush may look like they are mentally retarded.
