Quickie Rollout and questions

Just finished a quickie rollout ... looks like we sacrifice approx. 2% wins for extra 7.5% gammons ... how many players would try to solve this mathematically over the board versus "gut instinct" given that we are not dealing with a lot of equity either way ? Also, quite often I will play the safer route if I think the decision is close, just so the other player doesn't gain a psychological/brain boost from "stealing" a victory. Is this a good approach ? Of course, it could go the other way and I could steal a gammon for an opposite psychological advantage ... hmmmm
