The most likely guy to keep his genes in the pool was probably whoever stuck around to spear the mastodon before it got into the cave, teach his boys to hunt, and help his girls find mates who would do as he had done. And oh yeah, teach the girls to hunt, too--keeps more options open if one of the fellas ends up on the wrong side of a saber-toothed tiger. (wrong side, in this case, being the inside.)
