Your old, rich, ugly guy may end up with the beautiful young 21-year-old (who may or may not be bright)...but those gorgeous children they have, are probably perpetuating the handsome young gardener's genes

LMAO...nowadays you are no doubt correct. But back in more primitive times, or even some countries in our modern world, I strongly suspect those beautiful daughters would disproportionately get paired off with someone that the rich or powerful father (and mother) thought suitable, i.e. another rich or powerful man.

There are all kinds of things going on today with gene pool trends which aren't likely to be good for humanity in the very long run. For example, well educated men and women, who are more often to be smart than their lesser educated counterparts, tend to marry each other. They also tend to have fewer babies (or at least until recently) than their poorer counterparts who are likely to be not as smart on average. Thus over time we can expect that as we get wealthier as a species, we will also get less smart. Time to get our poorer counterparts into college in larger numbers (!), not to mention finish high school with a decent education for starters.

With that thought in mind, we do however tend to get smarter with better nutrition, especially during those first three critical years of life (as opposed ot three years after birth). Better nutrition is a nice byproduct of increased wealth for society.

Anyway, from a selfish point of view it is pretty irrelevant, the consequences are far, far into the future.
