If you knew your opponent would roll a 4, which would you rather have happen--you get hit, with plenty of return shots, and even if you miss them all you still have your anchor and a playable position. Or would you rather he anchors up, virtually eliminating the chance that you ever get to close him out for the gammon and the match, and allowing him to harass you from the anchor for the rest of the game?
If he fans after you hit on the 4 point, you're one decent roll from a five point board and a serious gammon threat. If he rolls a 5X, it depends what X is, but you still get some whacks at him.
The surprise to me is that with this score of 4-away, 3-away, the difference isn't larger!
But I see some good news here...you remembered to double early enough at this score where it still had a take, but you had a chance to gammon it for the match if things broke well...did they?
