Yes, for a long time, PTP's rooms have not been worth the price, even before everything started to go steeply downhill. One year, the stated price of lodgings for us tournament players was more than what one could get by the right type of independent inquiry (I complained and was given the better rate). But I used to stay there, instead of in town, because I liked the location (beautiful). No doubt the location was the sole reason the rooms were priced so high. But last time I went was with Matt, and we stayed at the Admiral Benbow or somewhere like that, for only a few pieces of silver per night; Black Dog made his appearance and we fled; Blind Pew was tragically run over.

Now where was I? They used to have good food and iffy service in the main dining room (I thought they were understaffed). Then both the service and the food got worse (service was terrible last couple of times I attended, 2002 and 2005), and one year they converted what had been the tournament room, which had a very nice view of the river and plenty of space, to an exercise room, and banished us to a worse location, stuffier and cheesier.

I didn't know the reason for the downhill trend, but I'll be happy to see a new location, of which there have to be plenty of good ones. I lament the end of some kind of era. I think the first time I played in that tournament at PTP was 1982. That was after the Abbie Hoffman backgammon era in Thousand Islands; as Barry Freed, late 70s I suppose, he was involved in the tournament scene as an organizer.
