Time after time I've seen the second-best "thematically wrong" play show up better than the second-best "thematically correct" play. The trick is to find the best move. Rankings of other moves are interesting because they expose relevant factors, and when a play is hugely right, often several plays on the same theme beat all others. But surprisingly often that's not true. Backgammon is a complicated, interesting game!
