I don't know what the 1970 U.S. Speed Championship was. I believe Robertie was a USCF Master at the time, which is far from world class.

The strongest speed chess player in the U.S. in 1970, and in the world, was Fischer, so this U.S. Speed Championship may indeed have been comparable to a U.S. Open which the likes of Fischer wouldn't deign to play in.
