Actually I think that top-level chess is tested for drugs. What I am sure of is that in Switzerland national-level chess is. But it is rather political stuff, an effort to comply to the IOC rules in the hope that chess can make it to the olympics.

While coffein is the first performance-enhancer one would think of, actually if my memory is correct the only positive testing I heard from was to pot, which I would rather think as a performance-decreaser.
