Historic Quiz problem 4

Magriel's criteria are conflicting; Blue has a far better board, but both players have the same number of checkers back. Both players have anchors, but White's is advanced and therefore far better. After either of Blue's reasonable moves, Blue will no longer have an anchor. So I believe the "board comparison" criterion is in Blue's favor (indicating a bold play), and the "anchor comparison" criterion is in White's favor (indicating a safe play).

However, to say both players have the same number of checkers "back" isn't quite right, because White's back checkers can no longer really be blocked, and Blue's are truly "back," on the 24 point. For me, Magriel's criteria point to a bold play.

But which is the bold play and which is the safe play? Hitting is bolder because it leaves more blots, giving White seven double-hit numbers instead of none that matter, not to mention chances to hit on Blue's side of the board, gaining more ground in the race.

Once again, Magriel's criteria help me find a move. "When in doubt, hit" is also helpful. 24/16* for me.
