I'd just take three off, because the "safe play" isn't safe anyway. You can leave shots, or get hit and get a second man picked up, no matter what you do. If you take more checkers off, at least you win more gammons when it works, and even the occasional stray BG if your dice remain stuck together for awhile longer.
