What is Cancelgammon?

From the Madison Club site:
"To keep track of whether or not a cancel privilege has been invoked for a given game, each player places a coin (or some similar marker) in the center of the board (just like centering the doubling cube) before each game starts."
An interesting variation might be to have just one cancel marker that starts out in the center like a doubling cube, and both players have access to it. When you cancel your opponent's roll, you must give the marker to your opponent and only he may issue the next cancel. Later, if he cancels one of your rolls, you own the marker, etc.
That brings up the question, what would be worth more -- owning the doubling cube, or owning the cancel marker?
