In Response To: Adam's Cube Decision vs. UBK (bob koca)

Okay, I watched this game, and walked by during the one before it, in which I noted that Adam missed a double out. He missed 4 more in my opinion in this game, before he correctly doubled after leaving two consecutive shots.

Perhaps he was waiting because I pointed out an error he made in the first round of the tournament by doubling a slight advantage leading 4-1/7. I redoubled and built a 5 point board with him on the roof. He tossed a 17-1 shot from the bar to win, and after the match noted he was lucky. I like Adam and his dad, but not losing... So I lectured him a bit about that noting that he will have to KEEP getting lucky if he throws the cube around leading like that.

So, maybe he was protecting his lead in a NON volatile position bearing in against 2 points now? That is a mis-application of a principle he just learned, is all. It always takes awhile to assimilate nuances into your game.

The redouble is MANDATORY, and nobody here is a donkey either. Missing 4 sure double outs shows confusion. Hair literally standing on end, (because Adam was endlessly running his hands through it), shaking hands, and excessive underarm perspiration were all clearly evident. The man is nervous, and after leaving 2 consecutive direct shots and getting missed... in the second bear in against the 2 point that went bad in a ROW... Then doubling and being taken, only to roll one of his worse numbers... Even if the man CAN muster up enough courage to do the right thing and TAKE, which would have astonished me, who cares? Adam says he would have taken, but he was psychologically devastated at the time. Bob gave him a break by not redoubling, no matter what the bots say. IF Bob "fucks up" and redoubles, but wins... Who is in a better space to continue this match? Adam is not yet used to having a crowd of watchers. After no redouble, hit, redouble, pass... They all lost interest and walked away. RIVET the watchers! Win 4 points, or LOSE. You are going to probably lose anyway... unless you get to 7 points NOW. Then MORE people will come to watch the public "hanging". Take advantage of pressure, it is worth more than the 1 measely percent MWC you save by doing what Gnu or Snowie would. The also said you should double if there was 7% chance of your opponent passing. That is like, what, 1 in 15 players? Come on!

BTW a couple of other watchers who felt strongly about redoubling were Munitz and Mattig. Tough customers redouble and keep the pressure ON. It produces mistakes, [and wins].

If you are not going to "risk it all" down 6-3/9, holding the cube, against this player... then when WILL you, Bob?

No offense intended to Adam, I am just reporting the facts here. He is not a donkey for missing doubles, he is just a human under pressure. We have all been there! Adam will calm down more next time, and be a better player too. We all improve incrementally by learning from our mistakes. There are just so many mistakes to make that it takes a long time to make them all. The best time to take advantage of nerves is when someone has some. You poker players should have noticed these things. I did, and I had an objective viewpoint!

Congratulations Adam Bennet... You did very well to win the consolation in a tough tournament... Against the best player in the history of the ABT. You beat me too, and even UBK. Maybe after reading this you will learn to disguise your emotions a little better next time, and that will make you a tougher customer.
