agree with Neil, as I stated in another thread at this site earlier. Steve Brown was 9-1, he took second place to a 10-2 player.
I think Steve should have been declared the winner at 9-0, the other three at 7-2 can find playoffs for 2nd 3rd...
OR: The loser of a playoff decided by coin flip becomes 3/4th place, along with the loser of the semi-final match. They both have the same number of losses now @ 3, (even though one could have an additional win). The winner of the match created by coin flip takes SECOND, as he still has 2 more losses than the winner.
The standardized ABT point structure fits more uniformly when there is 1st, 2nd, 3&4 places... doesn't it?
The coin flip/dice roll/straw draw to determine the bye is more for SPEED than it is for fairness. But it is clearly more fair to the weakest player of the three 7-2s. The problem with the format is time, and there is always a conflict with someone in BOTH events... not to mention doubles! (As tedious an event as there ever was). This time 3 of the participants had schedule conflicts... PLAYING even a round robin of 1 point matches delayed the completion of the tournament MUCH more than flipping coins.
24 players equals 8 byes in the first round. They aren't complaining, but the two guys who don't get a bye into the money round WILL be! 8 players are happy to get a bye, instead of 1 guy extremely HAPPY dude in the money. Basing byes on the number of HAPPY folks instead of the number or marginally or definitely angry people who don't get a bye... Is a glass half full solution.
Nobody grouses about not getting one of the original 8 byes. There will never be a big discussion in this forum about that scenario here. Yet, we are still cogitating over this situation right here.
Random byes may not be what everyone would prefer, but there is NO question that it is the most fair deal.
