In the 1970s, pretty patterns were the thing. Perceived prettiness correlated highly with purity.
Pretty aspects of 15(2) 9(2) include the solid three-prime and the lack of a four-stack on the midpoint. Some ancient experts would have perceived a possible function of the 15 point as an extended bar point, in variations where White got hit in the process of vacating the midpoint while keeping the 15. Some others may have liked the one-turn blockage of opponent's blot (though that's really a mixed blessing because if it's hit, opponent has a shot to double-anchor, which will vastly increase shot equity).
But, pretty, schmetty: Look ahead one roll, and count blot numbers!
Then too, 21/9(2) achieves a more compact position, which should be seen as a pretty thing. This kind of vision can be developed, and is developed in praxis.
