In American baseball, does a batter sometimes get impatient after letting some bad pitches go by, so that now he's ready to swing at a pitch that is bad, just not as bad as the ones immediately preceding? And is that where we are here?

I don't think so...I double, not just because of the hitting threat, but because 6-6, 5-5, 4-4, 3-3, 3-1, and 1-1 are all excellent also. Some of these may actually be bigger threats than the hit. 5-3 and 6-1 are also decent. Go for it and double now!
