I have an example somewhere of an early position somewhat similar. The choice there was whether to make the 5 point achieving a 6-5-3-1 board but with no builders, or to play 8/4* (starting with a blot on 8 point and one spare on the 6). Hitting turned out clearly right, which surprised me at the time, as I believe it was I and a doubles partner who chose to make the 5. I'll try to dig it up, but I make no promises.
