... stop at round 9 or 10 (specified beforehand) and as long as you have one clear winner the tournament is over.

The problem is that at round n − 1 you may have players with two losses and no chance to win the tournament. It's usually not good to have players still playing with no chance to win.

I suppose if you guaranteed that anyone who makes it to round n wins a share of the prize money, that might solve the problem.

Personally, I like it when a tournament comes down to one final match to determine the winner.
