Two points to make here.
1) The tourney was not intended to be a true Swiss knockout ie not intended to be Swiss all the way to the end. It was intended to be played as Swiss for more than 8 rounds and as was posted here at BGO, intended to be played as Swiss until playoffs could be set up under the following formula... an undefeated counts as 4 spots out of 8, players with one loss get two spots out of 8, players with two losses get 1 spot out of 8. Playoffs will be set up only when 8 or fewer spots can be taken. The issue was that Steve at 9-0 got 4 spots, while, Neil, Tim, Matt at 7-2 had only 1 spot. So Steve went to the finals while a bye method had to be arranged for the three 7-2's. Had there been 4 7-2's or had there been the 9-0, one 8-1 and two 7-2's eight places in the playoffs would have been setup perfectly and no issues would have occured.
2) The T was not too long, it was no longer than the Labor Day events in Indy were. They usually stopped Swiss after 8 rounds and made playoffs which lasted 4 rounds...ie 12 rounds to end the event, just like this past Madison. Sometimes when in Indy when there were big 60+ turnouts, the finals actually took 5 rounds, resulting in a 13 round event.
I am working with the Madison staff and have strong hopes of making this event 100% Swiss in the future as I feel that it is the most fair method of conducting this interesting and different format.
