Excellent counter-example. I see three things worth noting.
1. Obviously, the five point is better than the four point. This gets us leaning towards 8-5, 6-5.
2. When you play 24-20 with a 4-2, you get to play 13-11 as a bonus. You don't get the bonus after playing 24-20 with a 3-1. The stack on the mid-point remains. The value of the defensive play is less which gets us leaning away from 24-20.
3. Notice that threes play well after 42P. Most of them are used to play 8-5*. The four point doesn't block anything next shake. However, fours play poorly after 31P. With the five point open, many of them would be played 24-20 trying to make an advanced anchor. After the five point is made, an inferior four must be chosen. So, making the five point has a significant immediate effect on play. This pushes us over the top favoring 8-5, 6-5.
