I'm thinking wow, this is a lot of paragraphs with a lot of what-ifs and contingencies and variations.
I'm still a couple cups of coffee short of following it, but that's my problem. Can all the variations discussed here be codified in a clear manner that a tournament director can follow in an actual tournament?
As opposed to a description of the modified playoff format that takes a couple of sentences.
Coolrey accused UBK of being wimpy and not playing to RIVET the watchers. Well, I can see how Tim Mabee vs. Steve Brown in Madison would have been riveting since it was one match for the trophy. If it was Tim Mabee vs. Steve Brown in match 1 and we know Tim Mabee would have had to win three matches would match 1 really be as riveting? Or match 2? If I face a several hour drive home I'm thinking, hmm, to see Tim win would require 3 matches, maybe 5 hours, and it isn't likely to happen anyway, I think I'll hit the road.
I kinda like the modified playoff format. Thought it added a little excitement at the end. But hey, I'm really okay with whatever happens, the ABT is great, and it's good to know that accomplished players and directors that love this game are making these decisions and looking for ways to improve an already great thing. Just adding my two cents' worth.
