Shouldn't it be the responsibility of the tournament organizer to create conditions of contest that cannot be gamed? See the ad nauseum discussion in Bridge World Magazine over the past decade or so under the rubric of "sportsmanlike dumping."
Imagine you're playing in the finals where the prize structure awards you $1000 for winning and $1 million for losing. You would feel awkward no matter what the outcome. You shouldn't be put in the situation.
Side pools are problematic. Calcuttas even more so.
