I think 4/0 4/2 may be the best way to get the gammon as well.

Kit often uses the reasoning: "If you know you have to roll a specific number, assume you will do so, and make the play that works best if you do". This applies here as well, as far as getting the gammon goes we are pretty desperate, and need to roll big doubles. Given that we do we will want to be even on the outside point, any added gammons gotten from the extra checker off must be outweighed by lost games and gammons from getting hit.

Of course, if the gammongetting play meant added risk of losing, the above reasoning would be useless, but here 4/0 4/2 is safer all over as well.
