Installing GNU-bg on UBUNTU

I've always installed from the source, however you might be able to convert the rpms (the package format of Redhat/Suse/Fedora) to debs (the package format for Debian/Ubuntu). Something like this (at a terminal):

sudo alien gnubg-0.9.0-1.i586.rpm

And if that works then:

sudo dpkg -i gnubg_0.9.0-1.i586.deb

I run Debian but haven't tried this. Compiling and installing from source isn't too difficult, however there are some packages you'll need to make sure are installed first. Read the INSTALL file and it lists the stuff you'll need. All of these should be in the Ubunutu repositories so you would just need to do something like (starting with the first one):

sudo apt-get install autoconf
sudo apt-get install automake
sudo apt-get install bison

And so on down the list. The development libraries usually start with "lib" so where it asks for "png" you would actually use "libpng".

OK, so it's starting to sound more complicated than it really needs to be. I just tried to convert the rpm file and it failed for me (I'm running and AMD64 and it didn't recognize my architecture) but depending on what kind of machine you have you might have better luck. But my real advice is to compile it from source, it will take some effort but the program is primarily developed in Linux so with some perseverance you will be able to get it to work and after you've done it once you'll easily be able to keep up-to-date with the very latest versions.

You can email me or we can try to get it working for you via this forum.
