Hitting may buy some time to make a 6 prime of your own. Allowing him to play his whole roll offers a dangerous opponent options to be creative. Being stuck on his ace point is kind of an illusion... With three men back he is more likely to crack... Your biggest problem is the straggler on the midpoint which will get picked up often in the variations where his attack works.
In other words the best Defense is a good offense. He may still be able to attack you, but mostly it will be with a blot and numbers like 16, and of course:
26 from the baRRRrrrrrrrrr...
Crack his prime immediately.
