It depends. Lets say you need much more memory than 4GB available for a CPU. How much do you pay for a box that can host 24 Q6700. How much energy do you need etc...

If you have a demand that doesn't met the offerings by the plain vanilla boxes it get's expensive.

But I agree, for a good ecomposable problem, a net of cheap boxes will be cheaper. Interisting would be also a small cluster of PS3 or high-end graphic cards.

When you use Java this might be the hottest box in town ;)
