Regarding Lamford's criterion, the position is borderline, with some wastage for White, and it looks like the blockade should tip the chose towards not hitting.

In the book, Robertie seems to miss White's gammons after 4/3*. This choice is more gammonish for both players and it is not obvious that this helps Blue more than White.
