I'm sure many of us would like to play in Major League Baseball, the NFL, or the NBA but recognize, for any number of reasons, we're not going to be able to do so.

One big difference with this analogy and with backgammon is that BG is an abstract strategy game, and except for procedural things, the physical motion that one must undergo doesn't really affect your skill at the game. In sports, it's the whole game.

A few years ago, there was a whole hubbub over a golfer named Casey Martin who wanted to use a golf cart during PGA Tour events, and successfully sued the PGA under the Americans with Disabilities Act, with the case making it all the way to the SCOTUS. I have long been on the side of the PGA on this one.
