I agree that you will often pay a premium for the fastest cpu, but check, you never know.
An Extreme is a Quad core that has been souped up. It has a front side bus speed of 1600 MHZ vs 1333 MHz for the Quad. The Extreme also uses a new memory type (FDB) that is supposed to be better than the DDR2 or DDR3 used in the quad core.
As far as speed in rollouts, the best CPUs in descending order should be:
1. (fastest) Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9770
* 3.20 GHz, DDR3-1333 (Yorkfield XE)
##9063##
2. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650
* 3.00 GHz, DDR3-1333 (Yorkfield) ##8558##
3. Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650
* 3.00 GHz, DDR3-1333 (Yorkfield XE
##8558##
4. Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650
* 3.00 GHz, DDR3-1333 (Yorkfield XE
##8301##
5. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
* 2.83 GHz, DDR3-1333 (Yorkfield)
##8098##
6. Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800
* 2.66 GHz, DDR3-1066 (Kentsfield XE)
##7942##
7. Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450
* 2.66 GHz, DDR3-1333 (Yorkfield)
##7664##
8. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700
* 2.66 GHz, DDR3-1066 (Kentsfield)
##7279##
9. Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700
* 2.66 GHz, DDR3-1066 (Kentsfield XE)
##7279##
10. Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
* 2.40 GHz, DDR3-1066 (Kentsfield)
##6662##
The numbers in ## are how fast the CPUs play Chess with Fritz which is probably the best benchmark for backgammon.
