A QX (Core 2 Extreme) is nearly the same thing as a Q (Core 2 Quad)...with one little difference. A QX has an unlocked multiplier. That means you can overclock it a lot higher than you would be able to clock a Quad, which are locked at a lower multiplier. That's basically what you are paying for.
An Extreme is a Quad core that has been souped up. It has a front side bus speed of 1600 MHZ vs 1333 MHz for the Quad.
Not all QX's have an FSB of 1600 Mhz. In particular, the QX9650 and QX6850 have an FSB of 1333 Mhz (more FSB = the higher it will clock).
The Extreme also uses a new memory type (FDB) that is supposed to be better than the DDR2 or DDR3 used in the quad core.
I don't know anything about this. It sounds interesting. But the $500 increase is certainly due to the unlocked multiplier.
If you are going to buy a top-of-the-line computer and willing to wait a little bit, I would advise waiting until Intel's Nehalem comes out. It is scheduled to come out in Q4 2008. If you buy it this quarter, it'll be expensive, but according to the previews Nehalem will outperform the old chips by a large amount.
