"ie he was not in a position to make his team more likely to lose so he could win a bet."
Disagree. The manager's task is not to maximize the chance of winning any particular game but to win the most games over the course of a season. Suppose he has a big bet down on the Wed. and Friday games but not the Tuesday or Thursday games. Which games do you think his best relief pitcher would play in? What is the chance that it just so happens to coincide with what is best for the team?
As a player he was definitely hall of fame caliber but overrated by many. Some of his longevity was due to the terrible managerial choices he made by playing himself when he was a player-manager.
