As a player he was definitely hall of fame caliber but overrated by many. Some of his longevity was due to the terrible managerial choices he made by playing himself when he was a player-manager.

The only season where he was sub par for your average player was his last season. (offensive, his defensive stats were still spot on)

Hard to overrate someone who bats over .300 for their lifetime average I think. (esp. if they played past their prime as you suggested thus hurting their overall BA)

The manager's task is not to maximize the chance of winning any particular game but to win the most games over the course of a season

This statement isn't completely accurate either but I agree with the point you were making.
