Taking a general overview of their stats alone it seems as if Bench is only a shade better than Carter. (though defensively Carter may get the nod)

Bench won 10 Gold Gloves and 2 League MVPs.

Playing in different times makes things such a difficult comparison.

Maybe so. But if I were drafting a team and those players were in the pool my choices would be Bench, Gehrig, and Mays, without much doubt.
