Great pitching staff beats great team every time.
Off the top of my head I'm taking Koufax (the '61 or '62 stats through '66 are truly mind-boggling), Gibson, Ryan, Carlton, and Seaver. Might not be fair to the earlier stars but the predate me a bit.
Some of Ryan's stats are mind-boggling as well. Always played for crap teams and still put up some incredible stats (same is true of Carlton). Ryan has 7 no-hitters and, as I recall, 19 complete game one-hitters. Nobody else is even close. He won the ERA one year with Houston with an 8-16 record due primarily to poor support. Carlton won 27 in '72 when the Phillies won like 50 total.
As an aside, another stat many overlook: Tiger Woods now has 13 majors, I think, and is chasing Nicklaus' 18 majors. However, again as I recall, Nicklaus finished second in a major like 21 times. Not even close.
