There are many players who would be versatile and capable enough to contribute at many positions. But they stay at shortstop because they are good enough to play it. For many players the reason why they switch positions is that they are no longer good enough to play the more demanding position. Bill James' writing on the defensive spectrum is relevant. One interesting aspect of Rose's career is the switch after a few years from left field to third base. Normally the position change is in the direction of the less demanding position. The move to first at the end of his career is consistent with most.
