From what I understand, Ruth wanted more ABs, and asked to be switched to outfield so that he could play every day. Apparently he didn't feel up to both playing every day and pitching on a regular basis. The Red Sox wanted to use him as a pitcher, the Yankees wanted to use him as a position player, hence the trade.
Let's compare his stats from 1915-1918 with Walter Johnson's and Cy Young's lifetime averages: Ruth won 66% of his decisions, whereas Cy won 62% and Johnson won 60%. Ruth pitched a 2.05 ERA, Cy pitched a 2.63 ERA, Johnson pitched a 2.17 ERA. Ruth had a 1.088 WHIP, Cy had a 1.130, Johnson had a 1.06. So, not bad.
