In Response To: Pete Rose (Stick)

Pete Rose served a 5 month prison sentence in the US Penitentiary in Marion, IL in 1991 for tax evasion: he didn't report income from selling autographs, memorabilia and horse race winnings.

Being a fellow native Cincinnatian, Pete Rose has been my hometown hero forever. My best memory of him was at a charity benefit basketball game, an activity some of the Reds used to do in the off season. At halftime a mob of people was outside the locker room: Johnny Bench came out and headed immediately for some good-looking teenage girls, completely ignoring all the young boys clamoring for his autograph. Pete Rose stopped and talked and signed autographs for all the little guys until they finally had to drag him away.

He didn't have a lot of smarts or natural talent - what he accomplished in baseball he did through sheer determination and hard work. And despite his time with the Phillies and Expos, his heart was always with the Reds. Maybe managers should be REQUIRED to bet on their teams: then they might put half the energy into trying to win that Pete did.
