Gibson's 'headhunting' was a part of the game -- certainly, in that era, an accepted part of the game. His intent was not to injure, his intent was to control the plate. Many pitchers 'practiced' the art.
Pitching was so dominant in the era that following Gibson's '67 or '68 1.12 ERA season the mound was significantly lowered the next season. The taller pitchers such as Gibson and Drysdale were awesome in the era.
I don't think the 'five punches to the face' conveys the intensity and brutality of the brawl. It was a huge story then -- the link to the film that Keene provided doesn't do any justice. It was animals gone wild, trying to kill, boasting/strutting afterwards, and never any repentance.
I never had any use or respect for Winfield throughout his career -- nor would I have had for the others had they amounted to anything.
