Let the bastard in already. From everything I poured through here's the skinny -

He knew about the plan to sabotage the outcome of the 1919 World Series against the Reds, he was also certainly offered to be cut in. He did not report this to anyone upon learning of it. It seems clear he's guilty about sitting on his hands upon learning of the scheme and not doing anything about it.

What isn't totally clear is if he played any part in it or if he took money for it. It appears to me that he didn't in either case. His stats speak for themselves, both offensively and defensively. (batted .375 with no fielding errors) He wasn't educated in the formal sense either and it seems that led partially to his post WS downfall and ban from the game.

After it all went down and 8 players were banned from life from the game, the other players eventually came forward and said while Joe knew what was going on, he played no part in the actual throwing of the game. They'd used Joe's name when convincing the ppl putting up the money to add credibility that it could be pulled off.

He should have been disciplined in some manner for sure, what would the penalty be today if the same scenario happened? I think he's paid his dues with massive interest. At the time it happened, the US court system let them all off, it was only the new (and first) commissioner of baseball that banned them, not taking into account each individuals involment but saying "you knew about it, you're out for life" making no distinction between the two acts. Gimp.
