IMO: No, you shouldn't, and yes it is. Your backgame will be incredibly lousy anyway, and you're not even sure of getting it.

Then 9/4 to kill 6s, and I'd just play 5/3 hoping for a miracle sequence that allows me to get a checker loose before the 6 point goes. Though maybe blue's position is lousy enough to warrant 6/4, hoping to clear the 6 and kill 5s next turn.
