Didn't read this yet, when I posted basically the same comment. What many people would think here is that going for 1 would keep you in the game longer. Not the relevant criterion but that is what many people think. Similar things happen in backgammon. For example not laying it on the line when one has say an 81% cubeless win% race lead at 2 away 4 away.
